Its not uncommon to be self conscious about your nipple and areola issues. A retracted or an oversize nipple can make beautiful breasts look abnormal. They can also cause functional problems while breast feeding
Nipple correction surgery can apply to both men and women. This type of surgery corrects problems associated with asymmetry, enlargement, protrusion, and inversion of the nipples.
Correction procedures are easy and can hide the scars very well.

Enlarged Nipples – Pregnancy hormones and breast feed can make your nipples longer , wider and darker.
Both , the length and the width, can be corrected by procedures done under local anaesthesia in rooms . The milk ducts and sensations are preserved
Inverted nipples – This is condition is more common than you think , affecting around 8-10% women at some stage. The milk ducts get scarred in some women after breast feeding . As the scarred ducts shorten, they pull the nipple inside with them causing it to invert. Some patients can have this inversion from puberty .
There are 3 grades of inverted nipples as per severity.
Grade 1 – When inverted nipple can be pulled out and remains out for a while.
Grade 2 – Nipple can be pulled out and retracts almost quickly
Grade 3 – When an inverted nipple cannot be brought out manually.
Some of grade 2 and all grade 3 inverted nipples need to be treated surgically. Unfortunately , in some of these patients, the milk ducts need to be divided partially and it can affect breast feeding to some extent . We hence recommend this procedure after finishing with childbirths
Enlarged Areola – Large post pregnancy areolas are very common. They can be reduced to a more pleasant size under local anaesthesia. Scar is hidden around the areola. Severe cases however, end up with a scar in midline of the breast called as a lollypop scar.
Puffy Areola – The areola looks cone shaped due to accumulation of excess of fibro-glandular tissue under the areola . It needs liposuction with a tiny cannula combined with excision of the tough fibrous tissue.
Scars will turn pink and firm for the first 4-6 wks before starting to fade and soften slowly. |
Keep your dressings dry for 5 days. Sponge bath is OK. |
Stitches will be dissolving and wont need to come out. |
Mild discomfort will be relieved with oral pain medications. |
Padded bra to protect the area is encouraged for 4 weeks. |
Apart from the general risks of any surgery like bleeding and infection there are potential
Ability to breast feed – is compromised depending on how many ducts were involved in scarring.
Nipple sensation – can decrease to certain extent.
It is very common for the areolas to enlage in pregnancy. They seldom go back to normal. We recommend reduction surgery once you are done with child births. The procedure does not affect milk ducts in any way
Scars are well hidden at the junction of areola and normal skin. They look pink and raised for the first 2 months but then fade over the next year. Scars at base of the nipple are forgiving given the natural rugosities in the area.
The surgical side is to be protected with padded bras over an occlusive dressing to avoid any handling or trauma. Its OK to handle them after 4 weeks
Yes and No. Only severe nipple inversions need release of the milk ducts where it may be partially affected. For the vast majority of cases milk ducts aren’t touched. Dr. Mahadik will assess you and answer this specific question at consultation
Do my nipples loose sensations
The nipples may become over sensitive in the early post operative period. They will slowly get back to normal in about 3 months.
In severe inversions they may loose sensations partly.
